An FIR was registered by the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police against Arun Srinivas, Meta’s India Head and Country Manager, primarily for failing to take appropriate action to prevent and remove AI-morphed and objectionable videos related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi from being circulated on social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram).

The key details related to this case are as follows:

AI-Morphed Videos and Student Protests: Recently, during demonstrations regarding the NEET examination and other issues, some AI-generated morphed and objectionable videos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi went viral rapidly on Facebook and Instagram.

Complaints and Legal Sections: The police took this step based on complaints filed by the Telangana BJP and other social media cells. These posts were alleged to be spreading confusion in society, posing a threat to public peace and order, and damaging the Prime Minister’s image. Cases have been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Meta Head Made a Co-accused: police made Meta India Head Arun Srinivas a co-accused along with those specific accounts, because the police and administration believe that adequate control systems were not implemented at the company level to prevent objectionable content and deepfake videos on the platform.

Notice to Meta: The Hyderabad police had issued a notice to Meta, asking them to remove the objectionable links and provide information about the accounts that were widely circulating such videos.
